Here are five of the most common toxins found in low-cost toys, and how to spot the warning signs before you buy.
1. Phthalates
Phthalates are chemicals used to make hard plastic soft and bendy — think rubber ducks, squishy figures, and bath toys. They're not chemically bonded to the plastic, which means they can leach out over time, especially when a child chews or sucks on the toy.
How to spot it: Avoid soft, bendy PVC plastic toys that have a strong "plastic" smell. If a toy feels rubbery and squishy but doesn't list its material clearly, be cautious.

2. Lead in Paint and Coatings

Lead exposure in children is particularly dangerous because their developing brains absorb it more readily than adult brains, and there is no "safe" level of lead exposure for a child.
How to spot it: Be wary of brightly painted toys with no safety certification listed, particularly toys with chipped or flaking paint. Reputable brands will display test certificates or safety compliance marks.

How to spot it: This one is genuinely hard to detect by sight or smell, which is exactly why third-party safety certification matters so much more than packaging claims alone.

4. Bisphenol A (BPA)

How to spot it: Look for "BPA-free" labelling specifically. Don't assume a toy is BPA-free just because it's marketed as a children's product — the labelling laws differ depending on the product category.
5. Artificial Dyes and Fragrances of Unknown Origin
Many cheap toys, especially clay, dough, and sticker products, use colourants and scents that aren't food-grade. Because children handle these products directly with their hands and often bring them close to their face, non-food-grade dyes are a genuine concern, particularly for children with sensitive skin or allergies.
How to spot it: If a clay, dough or craft toy doesn't specify "food-grade colourants" anywhere on the packaging or product page, assume it hasn't been tested to that standard.
